Mendocino Complex wildfire now the largest in California history

The Mendocino Complex fire continued to grow Monday, becoming the largest wildfire in recorded California history.

The enormous blaze, the product of two fires that merged, has scorched 283,800 acres — about seven times the size of Manhattan — in Mendocino, Lake and Colusa counties, about 100 miles north of San Francisco. While the fire is just 30% contained, it is now moving toward largely uninhabited, rugged terrain. At least 75 homes have been burned, and it still threatens nearly 10,000 structures, though no one has been killed.

“We broke the record,” Scott McLean, a deputy chief with Cal Fire, told the Los Angeles Times. “That’s one of those records you don’t want to see.” McLean said the fire was still “extremely fast, extremely aggressive, extremely dangerous.”

This is the second straight year that California has marked its largest-ever wildfire — last year’s Thomas fire in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties held the previous record at 281,000 acres. Four of the five largest fires in state history have occurred since 2012.

“We’re looking at long-term trends that are alarming for us, especially how quickly they are burning and how much damage they are causing and how deadly they are,” Cal Fire battalion chief Jonathan Cox told the San Francisco Chronicle. “It would not be an overstatement to say this is unprecedented.”

More than 14,000 firefighters are battling at least 16 wildfires across the drought-ravaged state, and nine people have died. Elsewhere, the Carr fire near Redding, which has burned more than 1,000 homes and resulted in seven deaths, was 47% contained. The Ferguson fire, near Yosemite National Park was 39% contained, and officials said much of the park would be closed indefinitely to visitors.

Proper Elevator Preparations are Essential During Hurricane Season, According to Schindler Elevator Corporation

MORRISTOWN, N.J.–()–During a season in which weather can be potentially hazardous, it’s important that building and facility managers take the proper precautions to help prevent elevator damage and protect the safety of building occupants. Schindler Elevator Corporation offers the following tips to consider before, during and after weather-related events. Customers should contact their elevator service provider for implementation of these and other safety measures.

Initial Preparations

“Building and facility managers should first inspect the elevator machine room’s ventilation openings, windows and doors for possible rain leakage,” commented Bryan Budnik, director of Repair at Schindler Elevator Corporation. “If water leakage is found during the inspection, it can be prevented from reaching electrical panels by installing metal splash guards around ventilation openings and weather stripping around any machine room doors that open to the outdoors.”

A diagram showing the location of your elevators, car numbers and the elevator car phone number should be in your designated security area. In addition, you should have your elevator company’s emergency phone number available along with any required numerical designations.

Before the Storm

Steps to prevent weather damage to elevator equipment should be taken immediately, noted Budnik. They include:

  • Closing all vents and openings at the top of the hoistway to prevent water from entering the elevator shaft.
  • Barricading the machine room, so that no occupants are left in buildings that are reliant on elevators for egress.
  • If buildings have elevators that are enclosed, managers should run each car to the center of the building, or to the top floor for two-story buildings says Budnik.
  • Elevators exposed to the outdoors should always be run to the floor below the top.

“Managers should also familiarize themselves with their equipment’s emergency systems in case there is a need to exit passengers quickly,” added Budnik. After cars are parked appropriately, shut the elevator down with the keyed switch and close the doors to prevent unauthorized personnel from using the equipment. In addition, place the mainline disconnect in the “off” position to completely remove power from the elevator. Schindler personnel can provide assistance if a customer is unsure of what to do.”

While parking elevators and preventing unauthorized use is important, preparing for power problems is a necessity. “Managers should also familiarize themselves with their equipment’s emergency systems in case there is a need to exit passengers quickly,” adds Budnik. “Ensure that the elevator has a surge protection system. If there is an emergency power generation system backup or an emergency return system for hydraulic, machine room-less or traction elevators, make sure it is reliable. Also ensure that emergency lighting and elevator communications are operable.”

After The Storm

Refrain from using an elevator during the weather event as water can disable elevators and lead to dangerous passenger entrapments. As soon as the weather has cleared, check for water on the control panels or in the machine room before restoring power. If water is found, do not resume operation until the elevator service provider conducts a thorough inspection.

“Because weather conditions can be unpredictable, Schindler recommends facility and building managers take these precautions and set up a process ahead of time in order to secure safety of the equipment and its occupants,” said Budnik. “Practice sessions should be conducted during low-demand hours of the elevator system and in the presence of a supervisor within the facility, and/or trained elevator technician.”

Donnelley Financial Solutions Integrates Bloomberg Data to Help Firms Comply with SEC Liquidity Regulations

CHICAGO–()–Donnelley Financial Solutions (NYSE: DFIN) and Bloomberg, today announced a joint regulatory reporting solution that integrates Bloomberg’s liquidity data with Donnelley Financial’s ArcFiling platform to help mutual funds comply with new requirements mandated by the SEC’s liquidity and reporting modernization rules.

Under the new regulation, open-ended mutual funds are subject to more rigorous reporting requirements for data and liquidity risk in their Form N-PORT filings. Gathering and synthesizing this data into a compliant format can be challenging without the right reporting platform and data source.

With the integration of our ArcFiling platform and Bloomberg’s Liquidity Assessment tool (LQA), firms can now automate custom monthly reporting for the SEC through the use of innovative techniques in big data and machine learning to provide portfolio-level market data and liquidity risk analytics,” said Eric Johnson, president of Global Investment Markets at Donnelley Financial Solutions.

ArcFiling, Donnelley Financial’s cloud-based application, enables firms to create, package and submit their documents directly to the SEC. The ArcFiling platform is designed to provide firms with a single source for the data, validation and filing capabilities to meet the N-PORT requirement.

Bloomberg’s data includes all three areas of the modernized Form N-PORT filing: reference data, risk data and liquidity, and covers an expansive range of asset classes, including equities, bonds, municipal securities, structured products and more.

Bloomberg’s multi-disciplinary team is experienced across finance, artificial intelligence and distributed technologies to ensure delivery of accurate and consistent data that when combined with Donnelley Financial’s ArcFiling platform, provides firms with a complete reporting workflow solution,” said Naz Quadri, Head of Liquidity Analytics at Bloomberg.

LQA is part of Bloomberg’s Enterprise Data suite of regulatory and accounting data sets that help compliance professionals at banks, asset managers, insurers and other financial organizations navigate an increasingly complex and data-intensive requirements. Nutanix Launches New Channel Charter: Power to the Partner

SAN JOSE, Calif.–()–Nutanix, a leader in enterprise cloud computing, announced today that the company is officially launching its new channel charter, Power to the Partner. The charter stands out from traditional channel programs by providing a unique emphasis on partner investments in Nutanix rather than solely on revenue targets. Further, the charter focuses on empowering Nutanix partners with the tools they need to support their customers in adopting next-generation data center technologies. As a result, partners will gain further avenues to grow their businesses with Nutanix and will be enabled to achieve ongoing, predictable success.

Nutanix first shared the high-level vision of its channel charter during the company’s Partner Xchange event in May. The charter has tiered status with partner status based on number of deals closed and depth of Nutanix skills rather than revenue targets. This new structure enables partners of all sizes to achieve the highest partner category. Categories are defined as the following:

  • Master Partner – Deepest Nutanix partnership and capabilities, where partner is closing the most deals, and holds the most certifications with focused selling on Nutanix’s core HCI products as well as new products such as Flow, Era and Beam
  • Scaler Partner – Growing Nutanix partnership and knowledge, where partner is developing integrated solutions around the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud OS software ecosystem and has increased the number and level of certified staff and deals
  • Pioneer Partner – Initial Nutanix partnership and engagement, where partner is moving first customers to the Nutanix hyperconverged solution and gains initial skills in the Nutanix core products

The Power to the Partner charter is now enhanced with multiple features to help partners guide customers through their digital transformations. These features provide tools and resources to enable partner success aligned to each stage of their customer engagement process, such as:

  • Land – Full service demand-gen platforms and tools to help with acquisition of new customers
  • Adopt – Resources for partners to run Nutanix demos, Sizer, TCO/ROI, and Xtract tools so partners can deliver rapid, smooth implementations of Nutanix-based solutions
  • Expand – Training for products such as Beam, Calm, Flow, Era and new technologies to help existing customers gain more value from their Nutanix environments
  • Renew – The cornerstone for generating recurring revenue, the program provides resources to help Nutanix and partners continue to delight existing customers

Supporting the Power to the Partner charter are rebates and incentives, certifications and training, differentiating marketing tools, and more automated sales support processes. This charter combines the resources of Nutanix with the unique talents of partners to best serve joint customers. Notably, Nutanix recently announced its channel Velocity Program, as one of the first stages of the channel charter in action – providing pre-configured customer offerings and content, as well as unique sales processes and investments – to enable partners to accelerate their success in the mid-market.

“We have seen a fantastic return on investment in our Nutanix resources and activity to date, due to the continually increasing demand by our clients for Nutanix based solutions,” said Tim Jeans, Datacenter & Cloud Practice Manager, Softcat. “We welcome this new channel charter as another sign that Nutanix is investing in committed partners such as ourselves, and look forward to additional growth and success together.”

“We applaud this innovative new channel program designed to help partners of all sizes succeed,” said Dennis Dahl, Chief Revenue Office, Trace3. “As Nutanix grows, it’s important for the company to enable a diverse set of partners who have a track record of skillfully advising their client base to fuel their market adoption. We are excited for this next chapter of growth together with Nutanix.”

“We’re thrilled to launch Nutanix’s very first channel charter that was created directly with our partners in mind,” said Rodney Foreman, Vice President of Global Channel Sales, Nutanix. “As Nutanix’s presence has grown, we see this charter as the stepping stone in our vision to empower our partners with the support and resources they need to reach their maximum potential alongside Nutanix. When our partners are successful, our customers’ businesses can better benefit from simplified and harmonized data centers for all of their cloud needs today and in the future.”

Toshiba Memory Corporation Develops Ethernet-Attached Native NVMe-oF™ SSD Prototype

TOKYO–()–Toshiba Memory Corporation, the world leader in flash memory, today announced that it has developed an native NVMe™ over Fabrics (NVMe-oF™) SSD for direct Ethernet access to data for highly scalable storage architectures, conforming to the NVMe-oF Specification Version 1.0.

With the new technology, Toshiba Memory has made it possible to simplify the hardware architecture of the JBOF (Just a Bunch of Flash) over an NVMe-oF network, resulting in higher performance, lower cost and lower power consumption compared to a conventional CPU-based hardware configuration.

The new SSD utilizes the Marvell® 88SN2400 NVMe-oF SSD converter controller, enabling dual-port 25Gbps Ethernet connectivity of high-performance U.2 NVMe™ SSDs.

Also, Toshiba Memory is utilizing an Ethernet JBOF prototype chassis, developed and built by Aupera Technologies Inc., to demonstrate the new NVMe-oF SSDs. The JBOF is powered by 1+1 redundant 100Gbit Ethernet switch units with dual 6×100 Gbit Ethernet uplinks, which enables 16M IOPS[1] system performance (4KB Random Read), the fastest ever seen in the industry[2].

NVMe-oF is expected to be widely adopted in the cloud data center and enterprise markets. Toshiba Memory’s NVMe-oF SSD offers near-native performance of NVMe SSDs, combined with fan-out scalability to facilitate adoption of NVMe-oF.

Toshiba Memory will demonstrate its new prototype system at the Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara, California from August 7 to 9 in Hall A, booth #307.
